Casualties

Here is a sampling of some of the casualties that the house and others have suffered due to my need to shower, nurse a baby and answer the phone.

Aiden was hungry. He got the milk out of the fridge and poured himself a bowl of cereal. Look closely to see what else he got our of the fridge.

Another day, when hungry, Aiden tried to make some eggs.

I heard him crying, and saw this. His leg is stuck between the couch and the wall and he can't move. Looking back, I should have left him there a while....or all afternoon.

Again, Aiden was hungry and got out the good cereal. Fortunately, he figured he didn't need milk this time. I won't mention that this was just before lunch, Aiden has been wearing these clothes for more than 24 hours, and he hasn't had a diaper change since bedtime yesterday.

Now, it is NOT a coincidence that all the disasters have to do with Aiden. The girls have suffered minor damages lately (messy rooms, undone homework, long stretches without baths etc.)

Happy Birthday Sydney!

Happy 5th Birthday to Sydney, my wonderful middle child.

What a revelation Sydney has been. The classic second child (Both Miranda and I were second children) Sydney is nothing like her older sister. She is difficult to define because she is so many things.

She is an emotional girl, but she is also the most patient of the family.
She is extremely shy, but she also gets along better with playmates. These qualities help her be a wonderful big sister to Aiden. How many 5 year olds do you know that just have an innate understanding of how to interact with younger children?

Sydney is quiet, although any child that is sandwiched between Emma and Aiden would also look quiet by comparison.

Sydney is tender. She constantly prays for friends and family who have suffered losses. A harsh word will quickly bring her to tears.

Hiding behind Sydney's quiet and shy nature is an unrivaled stubborn streak. When she chooses to dig in her feet and takes a stand on issues it can cause you to pull your hair out. Suddenly she has a fierce nature and strong personality. Giving in is such torture. "Why Daddy?!! Why?!!"

Sydney is a troublemaker. She does things just because she is curious and because she can. She emptied the entire bottle of shampoo in the tub. She took scissors to one of her eyebrows. She is a menace with knives and markers.

But she is also the most helpful and the most accommodating. She loves to help around the house and get things done. She is always willing to try new foods.

Yesterday I was talking to her downstairs, and I heard the other kids upstairs in her room. "Sydney." I said, "You might want to go put away your birthday presents before the other kids get into them."

"That's ok Dad." She replied. "They can play with them, just as long as they don't break them."

Don't ever lose your kindness and tender heart Sydney. Just stay away from the scissors.

Taylor Lives!

Sorry for the lack of photos of our new one lately. The dearth of Taylor photos has a direct correlation with our lack of sleep. The little princess refuses to take a pacifier. As such, there is a lot of holding and rocking going on. That being said, she isn't a terrible baby. She will sleep in a bouncy chair or a crib for a few hours at a time, and she is generally good natured. She is starting to put on a little weight and will occasionally flash a smile. She is very difficult to photograph. Why? Because she loves to go cross eyed.

Party, Party, Party

What a weekend.

The girls had a primary activity Saturday morning. I'm not sure exactly what it was about, but water was involved and when I picked them up from the church, they were soaking wet.

Next Sydney was off to gymnastics.

After gymnastics we hurried home and got ready for Sydney's Birthday Party. We rented a blow up jumping castle, invited almost everyone we know, and had a great time.

We cleaned up after that party and soon the house was full again as people started streaming in to watch BYU vs Washington. Lucky for me, BYU won. The angry mob might have burned the house down had things gone South for the Cougars.

We cleaned up that party and went to bed. Exhausted.

Someone had a little too much fun and woke up with a fever of 101.5 and threw up anything we tried to put down. Yuck.

Other than that it has been a nice easy weekend, and with the holiday tomorrow, the fun isn't over yet.
