Italy - Day 1 - Rome

The beginning of our trip to Italy...

Apparently a ridiculously long flight from Chicago to London doesn't sit well with Miranda.  We had only made it to London Heathrow and she was already beginning to regret the whole idea.  But hey, at least she looked really cute.

We finally arrived in Rome.  Only to watch the 20 minute train that would take us from the Airport to the city center depart as we were walking up.  So we sat around for 30 minutes until we could catch the next one.  And yes, those two suitcases with Miranda represent the entirety of our luggage for our 8 day trip.  Pack light, pack smart (wear the same clothes over and over).

Arrival at our hotel meant it was time to find a panini.  Lucky for us there was a fantastic little sandwich shop across the street.  While I was taking this photo, the panini disappeared.  We never did figure out where it went.

No time for sleeping.  We started out on our little adventure.  This little piece of history is the Theatre of Marcellus.  All we knew at the time is that we were walking down the street and suddenly we were looking at a building that is older than just about every man made structure in North America.  This particular building was completed in 13 B.C.

Crossing the Ponte Palantino into the Trastevere Neighborhood. (Looking north towards the Ponte Cestio)

It had started to sprinkle so we found shelter in the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere.  Supposedly this is one of the oldest churches in Rome.  We started to get an idea of the sheer magnitude of some of these churches.  Incredible frescoes.  Ornate ceiling tiles.  Gigantic naves.

Finally it was time for our first real meal.  I had done some research and found a small pizza place that was popular with the locals.  Like many of our meals, it appeared that we were the only tourists there.  This was just right.  Miranda's pizza had some unusual toppings (I think some of that is artichoke) but I went with the classic.  Apparently the margherita pizza has nothing to to with the margarita drink.  Who knew?

Finally we went back to the hotel and (easily) slept through the night.

Yay! I've been looking forward to these! Looks like you got an excellent start. But hey, where is the gelato?

Judy, do you see that little cup Miranda is holding in front of the ancient theater? That is gelato cup #1.

How much a barrier was the language?

None. Most people spoke a little bit of english, and then we made an effort to learn as much as Italian as we could. As long as you learn your numbers, and then some basic words like: ticket, entrance, exit, gelato, pizza, and "check please", you would be fine.

Nice start to the pictures. If your don't see tourists but the place is still busy, your doing it right.
